What Is a Joint Replacement?

Arthroplasty, also called joint replacement, is surgery to replace a damaged joint with an artificial joint (made of metal, ceramic or plastic). Providers usually replace the entire joint (total joint replacement). Less often, they replace only the damaged part of the joint.

Joint replacement surgeries can be of the hip, knee, shoulder, ankle, elbow and fingers. Joint replacement surgery involves removing a damaged joint and replacing it with a new joint. This can help restore movement and relieve pain.

Hip and knee replacements are the most commonly performed joint replacements.

1. HIP Joint Replacement

Hip replacement surgery is a procedure in which a doctor surgically removes a painful hip joint with arthritis and replaces it with an artificial joint often made from metal and plastic components. It usually is done when all other treatment options have failed to provide adequate pain relief. The procedure should relieve a painful hip joint.

2. Knee Joint Replacement

Knee replacement surgery also known as knee arthroplasty (ARTH-row-plas-tee) can help relieve pain and restore function in severely diseased knee joints. The procedure involves cutting away damaged bone and cartilage from your thighbone, shinbone and kneecap and replacing it with an artificial joint (prosthesis) made of m.
